On November 15, 2012 Jeff
Carrigan talk to my social media class on how to find jobs using various
resources, and how to stand out professionally to employers. Jeff told the
class that there are Marketing Jobs out there and businesses are hiring. The
job market in the Marketing Field has increased to 32% since 2011. I found this
presentation very interesting and insightful, therefore I’m going to share the
10 most interesting things from Jeff’s presentation.
1. Create
a prospect list of potential companies you’re interested in. Once you created
your list you need to do research on those companies by visiting their website
at least twice a month, because jobs usually get posted their first.
2. Check
out LinkedIn, because it’s the number one place were recruiters for businesses
go.
3. Best
and ultimate way to get looked at is if you know someone within the business.
4. Need
to connect with Alumni, student groups, and professional groups like Milwaukee
Interactive Marketing Association (highly recommended by Jeff).
5. Need
to Network! Have to keep building your connections or contacts and keep
networking. Everyone needs at least 3-5 contacts.
6. LinkedIn
needs to be 100% complete. Groups to join on LinkedIn would be any regional and
Midwest groups like Chicago’s AMA (highly recommended by Jeff).
7. Twitter
should be professional in nature, and should say something like “seeking
marketing internship."
8. Twitter
employer feeds and recruiters you should be following:
@CoolJobSatLC @Searsjobs @Craynal
@GECareers @24seventalent @Lindzsays
@HDCTalent @ArticelQ
@OrbitzTalent @ArtisanTalent
9. All
social media sites should be clean. Show your professionalism, and show what
you’re talking about in the industry. There should not be any religious,
political, activist groups, or swear words on your social media sites. Top ways
you can make yourself standout include:
·
Competence
·
Character
·
Chemistry
·
Customer focused
·
Charisma
·
Researched company and industry trends
·
Putting together a portfolio with your best work
·
Asking questions in interviews
·
Always sending in a hand written note after
interview
